Abbreviation of computer aided design. It is translated as computer-aided (or assisted) design, and is also called "CAD". It refers to design done in a conversational format by designers using a computer as a design tool. In CAD, the main designer is a human, and the computer is merely a tool to assist and streamline the work, which is different from DA (design automation), which allows automatic design by computer. CAD is composed of input/output devices such as keyboards, digitizers, light pens, image input devices, automatic drafting machines, plotters, terminal devices such as external memory devices, and computers. It is applied to all design fields such as printed circuit boards, machine parts, and building structures, and plays an important role in responding to the demand for small-lot production of a wide variety of products. On the other hand, the use of computers in the manufacturing process is called CAM (abbreviation of computer aided manufacturing), and refers to a system that controls machine production and production processes by computer, such as automatic processing and automatic transportation. As an extension of CAD, CAE (computer aided engineering) has also been developed to centralize data management and processing by computers, which simulates the entire design process on a computer, evaluates performance, etc., and provides feedback based on the results.

computer aided designの略。コンピューター援用（または支援）設計と訳され，〈キャド〉とも。設計者が設計用の道具としてコンピューターを利用し，会話形式で行う設計をいう。CADでは設計の主体は人間であり，コンピューターは作業を援助し能率化するための単なる道具であり，コンピューターによる自動設計が可能なDA（design automation）とは異なる。CADはキーボード，デジタイザ，ライトペン，画像入力装置，自動製図機，プロッターなどの入出力装置や外部記憶装置などの端末装置およびコンピューターで構成される。プリント基板をはじめ機械部品，建物構造物などあらゆる設計分野に適用され，多品種少量生産の要請に対応し重要な役割を果たしている。　一方，製造工程でのコンピューターの利用がCAM（computer aided manufacturingの略）で，自動加工，自動搬送など，機械生産および生産工程をコンピューター制御するシステムをいう。CADの発展としてコンピューターによるデータの一元管理，一元処理のために，設計の全プロセスをコンピューター上にシミュレートして性能評価等を行い，結果に応じてフィードバックするCAE（computer aided engineering，コンピューター援用エンジニアリング）も開発されている。
