A phenomenon in which a single fertilized egg divides to produce two or more embryos. Usually, due to some accidental cause, the blastomeres of a 2- to 4-cell stage fertilized egg separate and each develops into an independent embryo. This also occurs in identical human twins. However, it is a normal phenomenon in armadillos, which always give birth to four to eight offspring of the same sex. In parasitic wasps, a type of insect, several hundred individuals can be produced from a single fertilized egg. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
