Believer/Believer - Shinjishinnyo

Japanese:
Believer/Believer - Shinjishinnyo
Lay men and women who have converted to Buddhism. Shinshi is a translation of the Sanskrit word upāsaka (upasoku), and shinjo (upasikā) is a translation of the Sanskrit word upāsikā (ubai). When converting, one receives the five precepts and is given a posthumous name, with the title shinshi or shinjo added to the name to show that one is a devout believer. Posthumous names are also given to those who are buried in Buddhist rites, but the titles shinshi and shinjo are the most common posthumous names. In the case of the Jodo sect, they are used especially for young people who have not yet received the fivefold transmission of Buddhism.
