The name of the 300-meter street in the City of London that runs from the Bank of England to Gracechurch Street. It is synonymous with the London financial market, as it is lined with many banks and insurance companies. The name comes from the fact that merchants from Lombardy in Italy immigrated to London around the 12th century and worked in the financial industry. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it became an international financial center, and in the mid-19th century, a short-term money market consisting of commercial banks, bill brokers, the Bank of England, and other institutions was established around Lombard Street, and in the second half of the 19th century, a capital market consisting of merchant banks, financial firms, and underwriting companies was established. The details of this are described in W. Bagehot's famous book, Lombard Street: a Description of the Money Market (1873). With the rise of Wall Street in New York after World War I, Lombard Street's status as an international financial center gradually declined, but it still retains great influence today. Lombard Street: a Description of the Money Market(1873)に詳しい。
