A city in the central south of Nagano Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Its capital, Ako, is located almost in the center of the Ina Basin (Ina Valley), on the river terrace of the Tenryu River, and developed as a post station on the Sanshu Kaido road. It was once a center of the silk industry, but since the Chuo Expressway was fully opened in 1982, electrical equipment and general machinery industries have become thriving. Pear cultivation is thriving on the terraces. The Iida Line runs through the city, and it is a base for climbing Mount Komagatake (Kiso Koma), which towers at the northwestern end, and a ropeway runs from Shirabidaira to Senjojiki. 165.86 km2 . 長野県中南部の市。1954年市制。中心の赤穂(あかほ)は伊那盆地(伊那谷)のほぼ中央,天竜川の河岸段丘上にあり,三州街道の宿駅として発達。かつて製糸業の一中心であったが,1982年に中央自動車道が全通し,現在は電気機器,一般機器工業が盛んとなった。段丘上ではナシ栽培が盛ん。飯田線が通じ北西端にそびえる駒ヶ岳(木曾駒)の登山基地で,しらび平から千畳敷までロープウェーが通じる。165.86km2。3万3693人(2010)。
