Shinpukuji Temple

Japanese: 真福寺 - しんぷくじ

Also known as Hosho-in, and commonly known as Osu Kannon, this temple is of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, located in the downtown area of Osu 2-chome, Naka-ku, Nagoya. The principal image is a wooden standing statue of the Bodhisattva Kannon. In the 14th century, Yoshinobu of Ise Shrine built it in Osu, Nakajima County (now Hashima County, Gifu Prefecture), and while serving as its abbot, he also collected old books from Japan and abroad. Tokugawa Ieyasu feared that the books would be scattered and lost, and had them moved to the current site. These include 28 valuable books known as the Osu and Shinpuku-ji versions, including the Kojiki, Masakado-ki, Nihon Ryōiki, and several legends of the afterlife, such as Zoku Honchō Ojōden.

別称宝生院，通称大須観音。名古屋市中区大須２丁目の繁華街にある真言宗智山派の寺。本尊は木造正観音菩薩立像。14世紀に伊勢神宮の能信が，中島郡大須（現在岐阜県羽島郡）に建立し，その別当を兼ねて内外の古書籍を集めた。徳川家康はその書籍の散逸をおそれ，現地に移建させた。大須本・真福寺本として知られる28点の貴重書がそれで，《古事記》《将門記》《日本霊異記》や《続本朝往生伝》など数種の往生伝がある。
