Also known as Hosho-in, and commonly known as Osu Kannon, this temple is of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, located in the downtown area of Osu 2-chome, Naka-ku, Nagoya. The principal image is a wooden standing statue of the Bodhisattva Kannon. In the 14th century, Yoshinobu of Ise Shrine built it in Osu, Nakajima County (now Hashima County, Gifu Prefecture), and while serving as its abbot, he also collected old books from Japan and abroad. Tokugawa Ieyasu feared that the books would be scattered and lost, and had them moved to the current site. These include 28 valuable books known as the Osu and Shinpuku-ji versions, including the Kojiki, Masakado-ki, Nihon Ryōiki, and several legends of the afterlife, such as Zoku Honchō Ojōden. → Related topics Osu|Nagaoka-so Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
