...The Wachau Valley is also known for its high-quality wines, with vineyards planted on the slopes on both sides of the Danube. Oil production began at the Zistersdorf oil field in 1928, and production increased rapidly under German control, from 56,000 tons in 1938 to 1.2 million tons in 1944. Even after the war, production continued to grow under the control of the Soviet army, reaching 3.4 million tons in 1954.
