...The Japanese elephant S.cf. elephantoides and S.cf. bombifrons , which were from the same period, were also large and are considered to be closely related to those found in India and Myanmar. The Akashi elephant S.cf. (= Parastegodon ) akashiensis , from the early Pleistocene, has been found in large numbers on the seabed of the Seto Inland Sea and in the surrounding areas as fossils, but it was only about 2m tall at the shoulder and had tusks about 1.5m long. Stegodonts found on the islands of Celebes, Flores, Mindanao, and Luzon are known to be small, with adults only 1.2m tall at the shoulder, which is thought to be due to the fact that they formed isolated groups on islands. ...
