A port city in the northern part of New Zealand's North Island. It is located at the head of Whangarei Harbour on the central east coast of the peninsula that stretches north of Auckland. Population 44,000 (1991). It is home to one of the country's leading oil refineries, and handles the largest amount of port cargo in the country, importing crude oil and exporting petroleum products. Industries include glass, cement, fertiliser and lumber. Originating from settlement in the 1840s for timber harvesting, the name is of Maori origin. It was incorporated as a city in 1964.
