John of the Cross - John de La Cruz

[Died] December 14, 1591. Ubeda Spanish mystic, lyric poet, and saint. His real name was Juan de Yepes y Alvarez. He studied at the Jesuit College in poverty, and in 1563 he joined the Carmelite Order and studied at the University of Salamanca. In 1567 he became a priest, and met Teresa of Avila. He endured internal pressure and was imprisoned twice. He devoted himself to reforming the Carmelite Order and founding the Discalced Carmelite Monastery, and served as vice-provincial of Andalusia. His works consist of lyric poems and commentaries on them, and occupy an important place in the history of Spanish literature. In them he sings of mystical experiences through three stages: purification of the senses, illumination, and union with God. His work Noche oscura (Dark Night) is particularly famous. He was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1926.

スペインの神秘家，抒情詩人，聖人。本名は Juan de Yepes y Alvarez。貧困のうちにイエズス会学院に学び，1563年カルメル会に入ってサラマンカ大学に学んだ。 67年司祭となり，アビラのテレサと邂逅し，内部からの圧力に耐え2度までも牢獄につながれる身となった。カルメル会改革，跣足カルメル会修道院創立に力を注ぎ，アンダルシアの準管区長をつとめた。著作は抒情詩と，それへの注解より成り，スペイン文学史にも大きな位置を占めている。そのなかで感覚よりの浄化，照明，神との一致の3段階を通しての神秘体験がうたわれている。『暗夜』 Noche oscuraは特に著名。 1926年教会博士。
