A marine fish belonging to the order Pleuronectiformes and family Strigiformes. It is found in various parts of Japan south of southern Hokkaido, in the East China Sea, South China Sea, Yellow Sea, etc. The southern tongue sole and Korean tongue sole are found in southern Japan south of the East China Sea and South China Sea, and the yellow tongue sole is found in the East China Sea. The body is oblong, thin and flat. The snout is curved ventrally like a hook, and the tip does not reach the front edge of the eye. The rear end of the mouth is below or beyond the rear edge of the eye. The eyes are small and close together. There are three lateral lines on the side of the body where the eyes are, and there are 11 to 13 scales between the top and middle lateral lines. The body color is reddish brown. It grows to a total length of just over 25 centimeters. It lives on sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of 20 to 130 meters, and feeds on worms and small crustaceans. Spawning peaks in the summer in coastal waters. The body length reaches about 10 cm in one year, 15 cm in two years, and 20 cm in four years. They are caught using bottom trawls, bottom gill nets, and fixed nets, and are served as meunière, fried, or grilled with salt.
