1866‐1942 German pathologist. Born in Berlin, he studied medicine at the universities of Bonn, Strasbourg, and Wurzburg, and studied pathology under Friedrich von Recklinghausen (1833-1910). In 1902 he became a professor at the University of Marburg, and from 1906 he headed the pathology department at Freiburg for 30 years. He achieved great success in many areas of pathophysiology, including research into cardiac physiology and pathology, thrombus formation, appendicitis, bile pigments, and the bile duct.
