A freshwater fish belonging to the Cichlidae family of the Perciformes class of the Osteichthyes. It is found in the Amazon River basin and the Essequibo River system in Guyana. It is one of the most common tropical fishes kept in captivity, and most of those kept in captivity are individuals bred in aquariums. The body is rounded and diamond-shaped, with significant laterality. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are large and have long, elongated tips, and the pelvic fins are also thread-like. The body length is less than 10 centimeters, but with the fins included, the total length is 15 centimeters and the height is more than 20 centimeters. The basic color of the body is silvery white, with four black bands crossing the axis of the body. They are easy to raise, and there are no problems with the water quality of Japanese tap water. The optimum temperature is around 25°C. To breed them, it is necessary to raise several fish together and allow them to mate. Pairs are easy to identify, as they create territories in the spawning area and drive away other fish. Spawning sites include the leaves and stems of aquatic plants, but in an aquarium, they are often allowed to spawn on plastic pipes propped up against them. The pair clean the spawning bed with their mouths, and then lay several hundred sticky eggs. The parents protect the eggs, which hatch in 50 to 70 hours. If the parents want to eat the eggs, the spawning bed is moved to another container for hatching. Many varieties of angelfish have been created through crossbreeding and fixation of mutant traits. Representative varieties include the black angelfish, black lace angelfish, golden angelfish, marble angelfish, and veiltail angelfish. Four species of angelfish have been described so far, but much of their taxonomic status remains unresolved. The only ones that are considered to be distinct species are this species (often called P. eimekei , but this is probably a synonym of the same species) and the altum angelfish, P. altum .
