A city in the Russian Federation, southeastern European Russia. A river port city located at the southeastern end of the Kuibyshev artificial lake, part of the Volga River. Population 678,000 (1993). Formerly called Stavropol, it was renamed in 1964 in honor of P. Togliatti, Secretary General of the Italian Communist Party, who died that same year. In 1966, the Soviet government signed a contract with the Italian company Fiat to build a new automobile factory and housing here, which resulted in rapid growth as an industrial city, and the population also increased rapidly due to the influx of workers from all over the country.
