Aobahagoromo (English name) green flatid planthopper

This insect belongs to the Hemiptera family of the family Lacertidae. It is found in areas south of Honshu, Korea, China, and Taiwan. Its body length is 9-11 mm from the wing tip, and it is flattened from side to side, with bright green forewings and milky white hindwings. It emerges once a year, overwintering as eggs, and the larvae that hatch around early May are covered in a white waxy substance and live in colonies on plants. Adults appear from around late July. They are often found in forests in low mountain areas, but can also appear on shrubs in gardens. They are considered a pest of trees such as mandarin oranges, persimmons, and tea.

昆虫綱半翅(はんし)目アオバハゴロモ科の昆虫。本州以南の各地、朝鮮、中国、台湾に分布。体長は翅端まで9～11ミリメートル、体は左右扁平(へんぺい)、前翅が鮮緑色で後翅は乳白色。年1回発生し、卵で越冬、5月上旬ごろ孵化(ふか)した幼虫は白色のろう物質で覆われ、植物上に群生する。成虫は7月下旬ごろから現れる。低山地の林中に多いが、庭園の低木に発生することもある。ミカン、カキ、チャなどの樹木の害虫とされる。
