Luqmān (English spelling)

Japanese: ルクマーン（英語表記）Luqmān

A legendary figure known in the Arab-Islamic world as the sage Luqman. He is said to have lived long before the Islamic period, and is said to have been Abraham's nephew, a contemporary of David, or one of the kings of the tribe of Ad. In any case, Islamic scholars agree that he was not one of the prophets but a philosopher and wise man. Many fables, sayings, and proverbs are attributed to him, and his name is given to the title of the Arabic version of Aesop's Fables and to the title of 31 chapters of the Quran.

アラブ･イスラム世界で賢者ḥakīmルクマーンとして知られる伝説上の人物。イスラム期をさかのぼるはるか以前の時代の人とされ，アブラハムの甥とも，ダビデと同時代人とも，アード族の王の一人ともいわれており，いずれにしてもイスラム学者は預言者の一人とは扱わず哲学者，賢人の一人と見なすことで一致している。寓話，金言，諺言の多くが彼に帰せられ，《イソップ物語》のアラビア語版の表題やコーラン31章の章名に，彼の名が採られている。
