1903‐75 Indonesian politician. Born in the suburbs of Magelang, Central Java, he graduated from high school in Jakarta before studying abroad in the Netherlands from 1923 to 1928, where he graduated from the Faculty of Law at Leiden University. He joined the Indonesian nationalist movement while studying abroad, and after returning to Indonesia, he worked as a lawyer in Yogyakarta and Surabaya while also joining the Indonesian National Party. After independence, he led the party as one of its most senior officials when it was rebuilt. He served as Minister of Education and Culture from 1947 to 1949, and later became Prime Minister twice, from 1953 to 1955 and from 1956 to 1957.
