Minangkabau people - Minangkabau people (English spelling)

Minangkabau people - Minangkabau people (English spelling)
Originally an ethnic group that lived in the Padang highlands in central Sumatra. They are also found in other parts of Indonesia and Malaysia. Their population is estimated to be between 2 and 5 million. Their language is Austronesian. Influenced by Indian culture, they established the Manila Empire, which ruled the highlands and had colonies in the Malay Peninsula. They have many things in common with coastal Malays, but their social organization is different, and although they are Muslim, they are matrilineal. They have a matrilineal descent group called a suku, whose head is passed down to the son of a brother's sister. A mother, her sisters, daughters, and children live in a large house on stilts with a saddle-shaped roof, and the son lives in his mother's house and visits his wife. In recent years, the importance of the above kinship organization has declined, and many men have left the village to start their own households with their wives and children, and these households have also started to own the land of the kinship group. Their belief system is a mixture of traditional religions, Hinduism, and Islam. In addition to paddy cultivation, tobacco and cinnamon cultivation, they excel in wood carving, metalwork and weaving.
