...This technique was inherited by instrumental forms such as ricercare, canzona, and Capriccio. An important work from this pre-fugal stage is the ricercare published in 1543 by Girolamo Cavazzoni (c. 1510-after 1565). It already established the Flemish style of imitation, as well as the tonal relationship between theme and response.
