1704‐76 Also known as de Haan, he was a Dutch physician. Born in The Hague, Netherlands. He studied under Professor H. Boerhaave at Leiden University, and was appointed professor of medicine at the University of Vienna by G. van Swieten. He placed great importance on clinical experience, and he regularly took body temperatures and performed blood and urine tests, and his accurate and detailed records of medical history became valuable documents. He was a capable clinician, but was difficult to deal with due to his tendency to argue, and he disliked new methods such as the percussion method and variolation. His works include Theory of Medicine in Clinical Practice, 14 volumes (1758-73). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
