King of England (reigned 1603-1625). King of Scotland, James VI (reigned 1567-1625). Son of Mary Stuart. Succeeded to the English throne after the death of Elizabeth I, and became the ancestor of the Stuart dynasty. He adopted the Church of England doctrine and oppressed both Catholics and Puritans, which led to the Gunpowder Plot by Catholics in 1605. He himself advocated the divine right of kings and clashed with Parliament over heavy taxation, the granting of monopolies, and foreign affairs, which increased public discontent and was an indirect cause of the Puritan Revolution. → Related topics British trading post | Elizabeth [I] | Great Britain [Island] | Charles [I] | Duke of Buckingham | Union Jack | Law Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
