Unlike conventional computers that execute instructions in sequence by transferring data one by one between memory devices, MCUs are specialized computers that perform calculations as data becomes available. For example, the calculation z = ( x + y ) * ( x - y ) is broken down into u = add ( x , y ) v = sub ( x , y ) z = mul ( u , v ). In this case, when the values of x and y are fed into the add (addition) circuit and the sub (subtraction) circuit, addition and subtraction are performed, and when the results u and v are obtained, multiplication is performed to find z .

記憶装置との間でデータを一つずつやりとりしながら，命令を順々に実行していく従来のコンピューターとは違って，データがそろうごとに演算が行われるしくみの特殊コンピューター。例えば，z＝(x＋y)＊(x－y)という計算は，　u＝add(x,y)　v＝sub(x,y)　z＝mul(u,v)に分解されて行われる。この場合，xとyの値が，add(加算)回路およびsub(減算)回路に流れていくと，加算と減算が行われ，その結果のuとvがでた時点で乗算が行われてzが求まるわけである。
