In February 1967, the Tanzanian political party Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) adopted a declaration of socialism in Arusha. In order to realize the Ujamaa socialism advocated by President Nyerere, the declaration called for the nationalization of major industries, agricultural development, and self-reliance. → African socialism
