…It was the forerunner of English dictionaries in America, containing about 70,000 words, words, meanings and usages unique to America, citing many examples from American works, and adopting a rational spelling system. Webster's dictionary was followed by three English dictionaries by Joseph Worcester (1784-1865) (1830, 46, 60). A so-called "dictionary war" then broke out between Webster's Dictionary, which had a progressive tendency, and Worcester's Dictionary, which took a conservative, flexible and moderate stance, but in the end Webster's revised version won. …
