This culture flourished in the Chancay River Valley, which was part of the territory of the Cuismanc Kingdom, which was established on the central coast of Peru. Its date is unclear, but records suggest that it was around the same time as the Chimu Kingdom, and it was conquered by the Inca Empire in the 15th century. The towns in the area covered by the Chancay culture were relatively small, with few exceeding 1 km in size. They built adobe houses with two or three rooms, and it is believed that the people lived a semi-agricultural, semi-fishing lifestyle. Irrigation systems were well developed, and corn, sweet potatoes, beans, and chili peppers were the main crops. Metalwork is poor, but excellent pottery (especially the doll vases excavated from tombs) and textiles can be seen.
