(1) A folk performing art. Also written as "Hachikou." A type of Nembutsu dance (dancing nembutsu). The dancers beat gourds and chant nembutsu prayers. It is said to have been started by the monk Kuya in the Heian period, and in the Middle Ages and early modern times it was performed by half-monk, half-lay entertainers as a form of door-to-door entertainment. Today it is called Kuya Nembutsu Dance, and is performed at places such as Hachiyoji Temple in Kahigashi-cho, Kawanuma-gun, Fukushima Prefecture, and Yoro-ji Temple in Nagoya City. (2) The title of a Kyogen piece. It is a substitute Kyogen from the Noh play Rinzou, but it can also be performed as an independent Kyogen piece. (1)民俗芸能。〈鉢敲〉とも書く。念仏踊(踊念仏)の一種。瓢簞(ひようたん)をたたき念仏を唱えて踊る。平安時代の空也上人が始めたと伝えられ,中世,近世には門付(かどづけ)芸として半僧半俗の芸能者によって演じられた。現在は,空也念仏踊と称され,福島県河沼郡河東町の八葉寺,名古屋市の養老寺などで行われている。(2)狂言の曲名。能《輪蔵(りんぞう)》の替間(かえあい)狂言だが,独立した本狂言としても演じられる。
