The peace treaty between Austria and the Allied Powers after World War I. Saint-Germain refers to the town of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, west of Paris, where the treaty was signed (September 10, 1919). The Allied Powers applied the principle of self-determination to the independence of the ethnic minorities in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, while often giving priority to the strategic interests of the victorious countries, especially France. Thus, the new Austrian Republic was limited to the capital Vienna and the surrounding rural and mountainous areas of the former empire (one-quarter of its pre-war territory), with the rest being ceded to Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Italy, Poland, and Romania.
