…Commander of the army that conquered Andalusia. A Berber. He served under Musa b. Nuṣayr (640-716/717), governor of the Umayyad province of Ifriqiya, and was head of the garrison at Tangier. In 711, he was appointed commander of a Muslim army of 7,000 men (most of them Berbers), and invaded Andalusia and destroyed the Visigothic Kingdom. The following year, he conquered Andalusia, competing with Musa who had set out on a campaign.
