He was one of the Diadochi who fought over the heir to Alexander the Great's kingdom after his death, and later became King of Macedonia (305-297 BC). He was the eldest son of the regent Antipater. After defeating Polyperchon and taking control of Macedonia (317 BC), he joined forces with Lysimachus, Ptolemy, and Seleucus, who were in favor of dividing the empire, and opposed Antigonus and Demetrius. He assassinated the late king's mother Olympias, his wife Roxane, and his surviving son Alexander IV in succession (316 BC, 310/309 BC), eradicating the royal line of Alexander the Great. Incidentally, Cassandria (Potidaia) and Thessalonica (Salonica) were cities that he founded, named after himself and his wife.
