…A representative high-quality newspaper in England. It was first published on January 1, 1785 under the title The Daily Universal Register by John Walter, a former coal merchant and printer who used a new printing technique called logography, in order to promote his business. The founding announcement proclaimed it to be a “recorder of the times.”
