New Mexico [State] - New Mexico
A state in the southwestern United States. Abbreviated as N.Mex. or NM. The western part is mountainous, including the Rocky Mountains and the Colorado Plateau, while the eastern part is part of the Great Plains that continues to Texas. Most of the state has a dry climate, with deserts and steppes. The Rio Grande flows south through the center. Irrigation and dry farming produce alfalfa, corn, wheat, cotton, etc., but sheep and cattle grazing is the main industry. In addition to uranium, which is the number one in the United States, and potassium salts, it also produces a lot of minerals such as oil, natural gas, copper, and zinc. It is also known as a center of rocket and nuclear energy development research, and on July 16, 1945, during World War II, the world's first atomic bomb test was conducted in the desert near Alamogordo in the southern part of the state. It has been inhabited by Indians since ancient times. Even today, there are reservations such as Pueblo and Navajo, and the Indian population is large. About 30% of the population is of Mexican descent and speaks Spanish. It was colonized by the Spanish in 1598, and became a Mexican territory in 1821. It became a U.S. territory in 1848 as a result of the Mexican-American War. Joined the Union in 1912. State capital: Santa Fe. Largest city: Albuquerque. Area: 314,161 km2 .
