Population 162,000 (1993). 112 km north of Vladivostok, it is the junction of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the railway to Mudanjiang and Harbin, and faces the Suykhun River. There are oil and fat, sugar, flour and meat processing plants, machinery manufacturing, locomotive repair factories, agricultural and educational universities, and a railway technical college.
