A perennial fern of the Dryopteris family (illustration), commonly found on Okushiri Island in Hokkaido and in warm areas south of Honshu. It is evergreen, with several leaves growing in clusters from a thick rhizome. The leaves are pale green, bipinnate, elliptical to obovate, and 30-60 cm long. The petioles are densely covered with large pale brown scales, and the Japanese name Kumawarabi (bear bracken) is based on this impression. Small, thin scales remain somewhat sparsely on the central axis and rachis. The veins are markedly depressed on the leaf surface. The sporangia are attached to the upper pinna, and this part of the leaf surface degenerates and shrinks. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
