Senichi Hisamatsu

A scholar of Japanese literature. Born as the eldest son of Shigejiro and Hisa in Fujie Village, Chita County, Aichi Prefecture (present-day Higashiura Town). Graduated from the Eighth Senior High School and the Japanese Literature Department of Tokyo Imperial University. After serving as a professor at the First Senior High School, he became a professor at the University of Tokyo. After retiring from the University of Tokyo, he served as a professor at Keio University, Kokugakuin University, Tsurumi Women's University, and other universities. He is a Doctor of Literature and a member of the Japan Academy. His research, which began with Keichu and the Manyoshu, spanned a wide range of periods from ancient to medieval times, and he contributed to the establishment of empirical research into Japanese literature. His main works include A History of Japanese Literary Criticism and A History of Waka Poetry. In 1966, he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit.

Japanese:

国文学者。愛知県知多郡藤江村(現東浦(ひがしうら)町)に重治郎・ひさの長男として生まれる。第八高等学校、東京帝国大学国文科を卒業。第一高等学校教授を経て、東京大学教授となる。東大定年後は、慶応義塾大学、国学院大学、鶴見女子大学等の教授を務めた。文学博士、日本学士院会員。契沖(けいちゅう)、『万葉集』に始まったその研究分野は広く上代・中古・中世にわたり、実証的な国文学研究の確立に貢献した。主著『日本文学評論史』『和歌史』など。66年文化功労者として顕彰された。
