Ushihara-so - Ushihara-no-sho

Japanese:
Ushihara-so - Ushihara-no-sho
Daigoji Temple estate in Ono County, Echizen Province. It corresponds to the northern part of the city of Ono, Fukui Prefecture. Originally the head of the estate was Todaiji Temple's Goshi Tadanori, but in 1086 it was donated to Daigoji Temple's Enkoin Temple, which was built by Emperor Shirakawa in mourning the death of Empress Fujiwara no Kenshi. Initially it consisted of 200 cho of wilderness and 25 cho of rice paddies, but it was gradually developed by inviting ronin (masterless samurai), and with the removal of the provincial governor's obstruction, it became the main estate of Daigoji Temple's Sanboin estate, directly controlled by the head priest. At the end of the Heian period, the estate was divided into four areas: Kita-sho, Minami-sho, Chuo, and Shobayashi, with a total of 460 cho of rice paddies and an annual tax of 500 koku. In the early Kamakura period, Nikaido Masayoshi became the land steward, and after the Jōkyū War, the land steward Tokimori allowed the land steward, the general pursuer, and the public official to enter the area and commit illegal acts, so the shogunate limited the number of land stewards and left the distribution of their profits to the discretion of the hon-jito. From the late Kamakura period to the Muromachi period, the manor was reorganized into four districts: Ushihara, Yoro, Shorin, and Inobe. It is believed that the land lost its real status as Daigoji territory around the time of the Onin and Bunmei Wars.
