French social theorist and businessman. Born in Paris on February 8th, the son of a banker. After graduating from the Polytechnic University, he met his teacher Saint-Simon in 1823, and after his teacher's death (1825), he played a leading role in spreading Saint-Simonism together with Saint-Amand Bazard (1791-1832). He organized the Saint-Simonists into a hierarchical religious order, and together with Bazard, he became its supreme father. He increased the number of his followers through missionary activities in Paris and the journal Globe. However, Bazard and others who opposed his radical ideas on women's liberation soon left the order. In 1832, he was sentenced to prison for violating the assembly ordinance, but was released the following year in 1833. From then on, he focused his activities on the realization of Saint-Simon's idea of establishing an industrial society, and made consistent efforts, such as founding an international research organization for the construction of the Suez Canal. He also promoted the construction of railways and the merger of companies as an executive of the Paris-Marseille railway company. His books include a collection of lectures he gave with Bazar and others, as well as "On the Colonization of Algeria" (1843). He died on August 31, 1864.
