Japanese: ジシギ(地鴫) - ジシギ（英語表記）snipe

This term refers to both Latham's Snipe and Common Sandpiper, both of the family Scolopacidae in the order Charadriiformes. It is a medium-sized snipe with a somewhat stocky body. It has a long, straight beak and relatively short legs. The upper side of its body is finely patterned with black-brown markings and prominent cream-colored vertical lines. The underside of its body is white, with black vertical stripes on its neck and black horizontal stripes on its sides. It is distributed worldwide except in the polar regions and breeds in grasslands. It builds nests on the ground and usually lays four eggs per clutch. Outside the breeding season, it lives in wetlands, where it inserts its long beak vertically into the soil and moves it up and down to hunt for earthworms and insects.

チドリ目シギ科のオオジシギとチュウジシギの両種を合わせていう。中型のシギで体はややずんぐりとしている。くちばしはまっすぐで長く，脚は比較的短い。体の上面は黒褐色の細かい斑紋でクリーム色の縦線が目だつ。体の下面は白くて，くびには黒い縦斑，わきには黒い横斑がある。極地を除いて世界的に分布し，草原で繁殖する。地上に巣をつくり，1腹の卵はふつう4個。非繁殖期には湿地にすみ，長いくちばしを土の中に垂直に入れて上下に動かしながらミミズや昆虫をあさる。
