Galileo initially aspired to be a doctor and entered the University of Pisa in 1581, but was disillusioned with the scholastic teachings and dropped out. He then studied Euclid and Archimedes privately under Ricci (1540-1603) in Florence, where he realized the importance of mathematics in science and devoted himself to its study. In 1589, he became professor of mathematics at the University of Pisa, and in 1592, he moved to the University of Padua, where he remained until 1610. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Ricci, O." is listed below.
