Collagen fiber - collagen fiber

These fibers are commonly found in the intercellular matrix of connective tissue. Collagen, a protein with a molecular weight of about 300,000, is regularly arranged, and electron microscopes show that it is made up of an assembly of collagen fibers measuring 20 to 100 nanometers. Collagen fibers disappear when treated with heat or acid, or digested with pepsin. When boiled and made water-soluble, gelatin (glue) is produced. In addition to providing strength to connective tissue in adults, collagen fibers also play an important role in cell movement and morphogenesis during embryonic development.

結合組織の細胞間基質中に多くみられる繊維。分子量約30万のコラーゲンというタンパク質の繊維が規則正しく配列されており、電子顕微鏡では20～100ナノメートルの膠原繊維が集合してできていることがわかる。膠原繊維は熱や酸で処理したり、ペプシンで消化すると消失する。煮沸して水溶性にしたものがゼラチン（膠(にかわ)）である。膠原繊維は成体中で結合組織に強度を与えるほかに、胚(はい)発生などにおける細胞の運動や形態形成にも重要な役割を果たしている。
