This temple is of the Kennin-ji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City. Its mountain name is Daitsubakiyama. There are many different theories about its founding, including that it was founded by Sozu Keishun, or by Ono no Takamura, or that it is the successor to Hoko-ji Temple. However, since the temple site is at the foot of Mount Toribe, which is famous as a funeral site, the temple has been believed since the Middle Ages to be the entrance to the underworld and this world, and it flourished as a place to welcome the spirits of the deceased, and was affectionately known as Rokudo-san and Rokudo-chinno-ji Temple. Even today, from August 8th to 10th before the Obon festival, the temple is crowded with people who come to welcome the spirits of the deceased from the other world.
