Japanese: メコン[川] - メコン

A large river in the Indochina Peninsula of Southeast Asia. Known as the Lancang River in China. It originates on the Tibetan Plateau, passes through China's Yunnan Province, flows along the borders of Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos, and flows through Cambodia and South Vietnam before emptying into the South China Sea. It is 4,425 km long and has a drainage area of approximately 810,000 ^km2 . The Mekong Delta at the river's mouth is crisscrossed with canals and is a world-class rice-producing region. Since 1957, the four basin countries have established the Mekong Comprehensive Development Project within the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) to promote development, such as preventing flooding downstream and improving irrigation water supplies.

東南アジア，インドシナ半島の大河。中国名瀾滄(らんそう)江。チベット高原に発し，中国雲南省を経て，ミャンマー，タイ，ラオスの国境を流れ，カンボジア，南ベトナムを貫流して南シナ海に注ぐ。全長4425km。流域面積は約81万km²。河口のメコン・デルタは運河が縦横に掘られ，世界的米作地。下流域の洪水防止，灌漑(かんがい)用水の整備などのため，1957年以来，流域４ヵ国が国連アジア太平洋経済社会委員会（ESCAP）内にメコン総合開発プロジェクトを設置して開発を進めている。
