A vibration that occurs within a vibrating system when a periodic external force (forcing force) is applied to the system, and its frequency is equal to the frequency of the forcing force. When the frequency of the forcing force is close to the system's natural frequency, the amplitude of the forced vibration becomes very large. This is called resonance. In a moderate earthquake, only a certain house may be destroyed, but this is because the natural frequency of that house happens to be close to the frequency of the earthquake, causing resonance.
