1558‐1601 Prince of Wallachia (reigned 1593-1601), Prince of Transylvania (reigned 1599-1600), Prince of Moldova (reigned 1600). He is said to be the son of the Wallachian prince Patrascu the Good, but his birth is unknown. After ascending to the throne as Prince of Wallachia, he strengthened serfdom by prohibiting peasants from moving land for the benefit of the nobility. Externally, he sought independence from the Ottoman Empire and allied with Austria. He gained fame in 1595 when he defeated the Ottoman army that was invading Wallachia at Cǎlugǎreni.
