…It refers to the evangelical ideas that the Spanish theologian Juan de Valdés (c. 1500-41) spread from about 1530 mainly among the upper aristocratic circles of the city of Naples, and characterizes the first period of the Italian Reformation. While it was close to the ideas of Luther and Servetus, it remained within the framework of the internal Catholic reform in that it was based on Erasmus principles and preached indifference to the church's forms and doctrines, an escape into the inner life, and a return to the practice of the gospel and the apostolic life and faith.
