A research group for Japanese painting. It was formed in 1916 (Taisho 5) by cutting-edge artists from the Bunten Japanese Painting Division, such as Yuki Somei, Kaburagi Kiyokata, Hirafuku Hyakusui, Kikkawa Reika, and Matsuoka Eikyu, along with Taguchi Kikutei, who ran the magazine Chuo Bijutsu. The group held its first exhibition in February of the following year at Mitsukoshi Main Store in Tokyo, and aimed for free research and individual expression. It held monthly study meetings, called for reflection on the Bunten authorities' lack of understanding of the new trends in painting, and published progressive opinions and editorials in Chuo Bijutsu. It disbanded in June of 1922 after the seventh exhibition, but its members went on to become leading artists in the Teiten exhibition (which was renamed Teiten in 1919).
