Mount Datun

Japanese: 大屯山 - だいとんざん

A volcano located in the northwestern tip of Taiwan Province, China, with an altitude of 1,087m, it is part of a chain of volcanoes, including Yangmingshan and Zhuzishan. Volcanic activity continued until relatively recently, so there are sulfur vents in various places near the summit. The crater fills with water during the rainy season and is also known as the Celestial Lake. Hot springs such as Yangming and Beitou well up from the middle to the foot of the mountain, making it a resort for the people of Taipei. The climate near the summit is similar to that of southern Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan, and snowfall is sometimes seen in winter. [Nishimura Mutsuo]

中国，台湾省の西北端にある火山で標高1087m。陽明山，竹子山などとともに一連の火山群をつくっている。比較的最近まで火山活動が行われていたため，頂上付近には各所に硫気孔がある。火口は雨季には水がたまり天池とも称される。中腹から山麓にかけては陽明，北投などの温泉が湧出して，台北市民の保養地となっている。頂上付近の気候は日本の鹿児島県南部のそれに近く，冬季積雪を見ることがある。【西村睦男】
