A general term for the lowest class of multicellular animals, the sponges. Except for some freshwater sponges, they are widely distributed from the intertidal zone to the bottom of the deep sea, attaching themselves to rocks, seaweed, and shellfish and being unable to move. Their bodies are made up of calcium carbonate and siliceous bone fragments. Water enters through countless small holes in the body wall, passes through a stomach cavity containing collar cells, and comes out through the mouth at the top. Well-known sponges include the common sea sponge, the Okinawa sea sponge, the Japanese sea sponge used for cosmetics and bathing, the blue sponge, and the staghorn sponge. → Related topics Budding Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
