A town in Tomamae County, Hokkaido. The coast facing the Sea of Japan is flat, while the eastern inland is mountainous. The main settlement is a fishing village established at the end of the Edo period by fishermen who followed herring north, and herring fishing reached its peak in the 1890s. Rice and dairy farming are major agricultural industries. Fishing includes flatfish, octopus, squid, and scallops. Forestry is also practiced. Area: 454.60 km2 . Population: 3,656 (2010).
