A town in Tomamae County, Hokkaido. The coast facing the Sea of Japan is flat, while the eastern inland is mountainous. The main settlement is a fishing village established at the end of the Edo period by fishermen who followed herring north, and herring fishing reached its peak in the 1890s. Rice and dairy farming are major agricultural industries. Fishing includes flatfish, octopus, squid, and scallops. Forestry is also practiced. Area: 454.60 km2 . Population: 3,656 (2010). 北海道苫前郡の町。日本海に面する海岸は平地,東部奥地は山岳地帯。中心集落はニシンを追って北上した漁民によって江戸時代末に生まれた漁村で,明治30年代にニシン漁の最盛期を迎えた。農業は米作のほか,酪農が盛ん。漁業では,カレイ,タコ,イカ,ホタテなどを漁獲。林業も行う。454.60km2。3656人(2010)。
