Neo-colony (English spelling)

...The indigenous people, who would later be called the marginal population of Latin America, were placed on the same level as the Spanish inhabitants under a formal and ideological bourgeois democratic state that upheld the banner of liberty, equality, and fraternity, unlike the colonial era's policy of protection and separation. They were subjected to a double oppression and exploitation, internally through the forced disintegration of community-owned land, and externally through the direct impact of price fluctuations on the world market. Thus, after independence, Latin American countries gained political independence, but continued to be economically dependent, and experienced the fate of being neo-colonies, ahead of the periphery of other continents. The major changes in colonial policy in the center during this period were the relaxation of control over settler colonies, as represented by the independence of the United States (1783), and the emergence of the informal empire policy.
