They were subjected to a double oppression and exploitation, internally through the forced disintegration of community-owned land, and externally through the direct impact of price fluctuations on the world market. Thus, after independence, Latin American countries gained political independence, but continued to be economically dependent, and experienced the fate of being neo-colonies, ahead of the periphery of other continents.
