A nematode of the Aphelenchoidae family. This is what causes the withering of pine trees, known as pine bark beetle damage. Between May and July, the hardy larvae are carried by the pine sawyer beetle, enter the young branches of pine trees through wounds caused by the beetle, and settle in the resin canals. After this action causes disease in the pine tree, the nematodes multiply vigorously and spread throughout the tree. One of the early symptoms of the disease is the cessation of resin secretion. The disease progresses quickly, with the needles wilting and yellowing by late August, and the entire tree turning reddish brown and withered by October.

アフェレンコイデス科のセンチュウ。マツクイムシの被害といわれるマツの枯損はこれによって起こる。5～7月ころ，耐久型幼虫がマツノマダラカミキリによって運ばれ，その食害傷からマツの若枝に侵入し，樹脂道内に定着する。その作用でマツが発病したあとセンチュウは旺盛に増殖し，樹体内いっぱいに広がる。樹脂分泌の停止が初期病徴の一つである。病状の進行は早く，8月下旬には針葉は萎（いちよう），黄変し，10月には樹木全体が赤茶色に枯れ上がってしまう。
